ENBS – 2018 Summer Performance – Dance Europe

August 17, 2018 By Carlos

School recap: http://www.enbschool.org.uk/news.php?ref=dance-europe-summer-performance-review

“The highlight of the show was Valcarcel’s staging of extracts from Sleeping Beauty, retaining most of Petipa’s choreography with additions by Valcarcel and the artistic staff. Using English National Ballet’s Act III set and costumes, but adding in the Garland Dance from Act I, this was exceptionally well rehearsed and produced, with some excellent dancing.”

ENBS – 2018 Summer Performance – British Theatre Guide

British Theatre Guide of the ENBS Summer Performance.

“Excerpts from The Sleeping Beauty are the crowning point of the evening. Featuring students from all year groups, Carlos Valcárcel and his artistic staff present a choreographic adaptation of Petipa’s classic. In the role of Princess Aurora is Remi Nakano, who joins Atlanta Ballet ll, the programme and pathway to joining Atlanta Ballet as a full company member. Highly musical, Nakano’s ripened and serene technique is more akin to an accomplished soloist than a fresh graduate. Partnered by Yuki Nonaka as the Prince, who joins Sarasota Ballet, together they deliver a valiant alliance in the grand pas de deux.”

ENBS – 2018 Summer Performance – SeeingDance

July 12, 2018 By Carlos

SeeingDance Review of the ENBS Summer Performance.

Review link: http://www.seeingdance.com/enbs-11072018/

“There was a buzz in Wimbledon on this hot summer night. It was not only the English National Ballet School who were on show; tennis fans were out on the streets watching play on huge public screens and football aficionados were filling the pubs to cheer their team on. For ballet fans at the New Wimbledon Theatre the performance was equally exciting and equally world class.

Concerto choreographed by the new Director of Dance, Carlos Valcárcel, is a ballet both beautiful to watch and one that serves its purpose in displaying the wealth of school talent at all levels. It was colour coded from grey to dark blue, designating the three student years, but the work was cleverly coordinated to maintain a fluid structure.”

Audition Tips!

February 23, 2018 By Carlos

After judging many auditions, I thought I might give some suggestions that could help you to be more successful.

  1. Try to wear dance wear appropriate to the style of the school you are auditioning.
(If is a classical ballet school, try to avoid shorts. Please wear tights, nice tight bun, classical cut leo. Find a distinctive color that people will remember. Boys…full long leg tights, tight shirt or leo, avoid shorts, etc.)
  2. Show always a pleasant attitude, not full perfect “Colgate smile,” but pleasant.
  3. Most of the time, I tend to give corrections in the audition. This helps me to see how much the student is eager to correct and re-adjust the technique. Try to listen and adjust.
  4. Don’t always step to the front but make sure the panel can see you wherever you are. Remember, if you can see them they can see you.
  5. Acknowledge the panel by saying a simple “Thank you” after audition.

Hope this help! Have a great audition season!!!!!
